| An excellent
travel & tourist information guide and travel search engine covering
the whole of the UK. Recently revamped, the site contains over 10,000
links sorted by county and category for probably the best guide for anyone
travelling in the UK. The site also includes a number of novel & useful features such as: Mystic M@tt - Personal Horoscopes! @UK News - with its very own Norman Newshound @UK Site of the Day - A daily quality travel site @UK Forum - A lively UK related discussion forum |
| Probably the worlds quickest and certainly easiest general search engine. Google has an excellent ranking system and almost always finds exactly what you want without all the other dross. |
| UK Plus allows you to find quality hand picked UK based sites, so if you search for "Lake District Hotel" you don't get something in the Great Lakes of America. Bliss! |
| Although it's not a search engine, the Yahoo directory is a hand picked selection of sites covering absolutely everything on the planet. Definately the biggest if perhaps not always the best directory on the Net. |
| Internet Search Station | There are actually 1000's of search engines and directories out there and this is a selection of some of the best sorted into categories. |
The Netpedia site now encapsulates probably the largest free web help site on the Net including HTML, Javascript, DHTML, CGI and Java for all abilities. My personal favourite is Javascript World which includes loads of free and truly useful examples.
Another free help site covering all the important aspects of good web design today. The site consists of short articles written by experts in their field from the Hotwired crew and mainly aimed at the beginner.
One of the best sites for helping those beginning html programming. It includes a very useful area to test what you have learned in the previous chapters.
Just watch the phone bill! :-)
The RSAC and a suitable browser (only MSIE at present) can help steer you away from undesirable sites such as those containing "adult material". It is not 100% reliable, but is a useful addition and will give the all clear to your site for wary users.
If you've ever wondered why the Net is running slowly, the Internet Traffic Report may be able to help.
Their servers scan the Net and report back the speed of various major segments to show you the slow spots.
Great software
Picture Dicer by Shoestring software
This great free product splits a large picture into several smaller ones then creates the html so they appear as the original. It saves a lot of download time waiting for one huge picture to download and can be used for basic image maps.
